Do Dancing Drums machines run tighter in clubs than pubs?

Had a few dead sessions on Dancing Drums at my local club too, so I get the suspicion. Thing is, there's no single published RTP on this one — Light & Wonder lets each venue set it within the state minimum, so the club machine genuinely can play tighter than the pub's copy of the same game. Whether the major "seeding in" makes it go dead is another matter, but at least the stinginess theory has a real mechanism behind it. 📊

That would explain a fair bit, mate. I've had nights on the Drums at my club where the thing played so dead I reckon the free games feature was a rumour, then walked into a pub across town and the same cabinet was coughing up minors like a lolly machine 😄 Always figured the old girl was just sulking, but if each venue sets its own return within the state floor, well, that's the game - some clubs will run it tighter and hope you don't notice. Greed never fixed a broken bank, as my old man used to say. Might start keeping a note of which venues treat punters decently and which ones think we're there to fertilise the lawn with our super.

Gary, that pub vs club bit lines up with my experience exactly, my club's Drums went so cold I gave up on the free games ever landing, then a session on the same cabinet elsewhere paid a minor within half an hour. Makes sense if the venue sets its own RTP above the state floor. I keep my bet per spin modest on these and cash out a hit straight away; chasing a major that's been sitting a while is how the bankroll dies 😭💸

That explains why my club's Drums plays like a tomb while the pub's one pays. Venues setting their own RTP means you're basically guessing blind, ask the club for the figure, good luck with that.

Worth adding the variance angle here: even at a generous venue, Dancing Drums is built so the hit rate feels brutal between features, most of the return is buried in the free games and the progressive jackpots, so a dead hour on the base game is the machine doing exactly what the maths says. The kicker is two venues running the same cabinet at different RTP settings can still look identical from one session, because short-run variance drowns out anything you could measure by feel.

Funny how everyone's got a cold club story and a hot pub one, never the reverse 😄 Could just be variance, the major hits when it hits, RTP on paper or otherwise 🎰

Funny thing about the "cold club, hot pub" pattern, confirmation bias does most of the heavy lifting there. You remember the session where the club machine gave you nothing, because it stung, and the pub session where a minor dropped inside half an hour sticks out for the opposite reason. The twenty boring sessions in between get filed away and forgotten 📊 Where the venue-set RTP genuinely matters, though, is over long-run volume, not one Friday night. Two steps: the state sets a floor, the venue picks somewhere at or above it, and you as a punter never see the number. So a dead hour tells you almost nothing on its own, Dancing Drums buries most of its return in the free games and the progressives, so the base game grinding away is by design. My rough rule: judge a machine on hundreds of spins across multiple visits, one session's worth of salt isn't data. It's just mood.

Confirmation bias, eh? Could say the same about the blokes defending the club machine. I've tracked my sessions on the Drums long enough to know when one's playing dead, sat through three dead hours at my club once, barely sniffed the free games, walked over to the pub the same week and the feature hit inside twenty minutes on a smaller bankroll than what I'd burnt. 🔥 Paul, sure, memory's selective, but the venue-set RTP point still stands. No single published figure means the club can run it at the floor and the pub can run it looser, and you'd never know from the cabinet. Would that pub machine have paid if it was the club's config? I doubt it. That's why I check the major's been sitting a while before I feed one, and I'm gone the moment a session doesn't pay for itself 💸

Steve_Gold, that three dead hours anecdote proves nothing on its own - here's the rub: since Light & Wonder ships this one with venue-set RTP down to the state minimum, two Drums cabinets twenty minutes apart can genuinely be running different maths, so both stories are true. My session notes from the club and the pub down the road are kept precisely because you can't compare them like-for-like. What you can't conclude from one cold night is the major being "due", the progressives just pool differently per venue, and the variance does the rest. 📊

Steve's notebook beats my spreadsheet on sample size either way, venue-set maths means the club one may well run tighter, so your gut's not wrong. 📊

@TheHouse_Roller yeah makes sense, tho at my local club the Drums hit big for me last night 😱🤑 A$400 off a free spins round, so maybe this club's not set tight after all 🔥🎰

@AceMania hell yes that's what I keep saying!! 🔥 A$400 off a free spins round is huge ngl, the drums were clearly warming up for ya. One hot night doesn't mean the whole floor's loose but I've always reckoned these machines go in runs, once the drums start hitting they keep hitting 🤑😱 might have to come check that club out myself 🎰
One slot, one love 🎰

@PaulRoller bias cuts both ways, sure, but Jack's right that venue-set RTP makes different maths possible. Anyone claiming the club one pays? Withdrawal proof or it didn't happen.
RTP doesn't lie, win screenshots do.

Jack's point about venue-set maths is the one worth holding onto here, because it explains why everyone in this thread can be simultaneously right and useless to each other. Two Drums cabinets can genuinely be configured differently, so the club-vs-pub argument dissolves into "which specific cabinet at which specific venue". Where I'd push back slightly is on the practical takeaway. Say the club unit is set a few percent lower. Does that change your session? Depends on the volatility more than anything else. Dancing Drums is already a swingy beast, and a modest RTP difference is buried under the variance long before a three-hour sample can detect it. Steve's dead hours at the club could just as easily have happened at the pub cabinet; hit rate on the feature is brutal in the short run regardless of the paytable setting. If you're choosing where to play, sure, pick the higher-return venue if you actually know it.

a$400 off a free spins round, good on ya mate 😄 though i've seen bigger hits than that come off machines that then went ice cold for a month after. josh is onto something with the runs idea, the drums have always been streaky to my eye - but streaky cuts both ways, so don't read one hot night as the club running loose. give it a few more visits and see how she pays you back, that's the real tell.

@LuckyStreakLuck streaky cuts both ways, sure, but that's half the fun of the drums IMO. You ride the hot run while it lasts. Hit big last night myself on Lightning Link at the club, A$600 off a bonus, and yeah the same machine had been dead all month before that 😂 If it goes cold for a bit after I'll take it, the wins banked either way 🔥💰

@LuckyStreakLuck fair call, and yeah I've seen that cold snap after a hit too 😂 that's why I feed the drums in short bursts, ride the run then walk before she goes quiet 🎰🔥
